2006 Far Horizons Award Winner!

The Malahat Review congratulates Rhonda Douglas (Ottawa, Ontario) on winning the 2006 Far Horizons Award for Poetry for her entry, “Non-Exclusive List.” The Far Horizons Award celebrates the achievement of emerging writers who have yet to publish their poetry in book form.

Douglas’s poem will be published in the Malahat’s Fall 2006 issue, due out in late September. Final Judge George Bowering (Vancouver, B.C.) chose her poem from over 450 entries submitted by 166 poets.

George Bowering also singled out four other poets as runners-up: Linda Besner (Vancouver, B.C.) for “Steak”, Amal El Masri (Montreal, Que) for “Fadwa Tuqan Mentors a Girl Who Wants to Write Nablus”, Rhonda Ganz (Victoria, B.C.) for “A Section in Texas of the Atcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe”, and Elizabeth Ross (Nanaimo, B.C.) for “Duet.”

Watch out for the guidelines for the 2007 Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction, with its special tie-in to the Robin Skelton tribute issue to be published in Fall 2007.
