FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 14, 2007
CV2 ANNOUNCES 5TH ANNUAL 2-DAY POEM CONTEST
Canada’s premier online poetry contest—the 2-Day poem contest is the annual offering of Contemporary Verse 2: The Canadian Journal of Poetry and Critical. The 2-Day Contest is proudly an international event. Ten bucks and an email address gets contestants, no matter where they live, ten words from our super-secret word-meister via electronic hyperspace at the stroke of midnight Central Standard Time, on March 31st. Then contestants have until midnight Monday April 2nd (CST) to write the best poem they can. It’s a challenge that many have grown to love, and now in its fifth year the 2-Day Contest promises once again to push poets to the limit, the 48 hour time limit that is.
All ten secret words must be used in the poem and the poem it self cannot exceed 48 lines, (48 lines—48 hours). Not only must the words be used, but they must be used in proper context no cheating by using a word like “ambidextrous” as the name of your dog. The omission of any of the ten words or improper use of the super secret word-meister’s private stock will disqualify the entry.
Prizes include $300.00 for first place, $150.00 for second and $75.00 for third. In addition three Honourable Mentions will be chosen. All selected entries will be published in a future issue of Canada’s oldest and most respected poetry quarterly, Contemporary Verse 2. If that’s not enough, all winners receive a complimentary year’s subscription to the magazine, and the first place Canadian finisher gets to judge next year’s contest.
Edmonton poet and editor, Jenna Butler, winner of CV2’s 2006 2-Day Contest, will be the judge of this year’s (2007) contest.
Registration is takes place on on-line at www.contemporaryverse2.ca. Pre-registration and an email address are required. Payment can be made through Paypal upon registration or contestants can mail in a check or money order (US funds are required from all non-Canadian entries paying by regular post). This year, CV2 is offering contest participants a bonus of a full year subscription to CV2 for additional $10.00 paid upon registration. The basic entry fee of $10.00 gets you into the contest—but the deluxe entry rate of $20.00 gets you into contest and a one year’s worth of CV2 for less than half of the regular subscription price ($23.98). Only registered contestants are eligible for this special rate. Winners, who have subscribed at this special rate, will receive at extra year’s subscription from CV2 at no cost.
At Midnight (CST) March 31st CV2’s list of 10 words will be emailed to registered contestants, and the competition begins. Final poetry entries may not exceed 48 lines and only one poem may be entered per participant.
